Residential Textures (ste.sty
)
‘Could do better’ is the story of this tileset, imho. Most of the tile groups are exactly the same, just a different colour. There are very few sets for rooves and pavements. They often clash with the building colours. The rocky grass doesn’t match the standard grass. ‘Does it blend?’ No.
The Redneck area has dirt roads, patchy grass, dusty desert and ramshackle wooden buildings with water towers. A huge 2×3 Elvis mural makes a great feature-piece, coordinating with white wood and musical notes. Coupled with adverts for beans and The Ol’ Banjo, you can make something truly Wild West. Kamil’s Western level does just that but its gameplay is rubbish.
Alma Mater Prison is unique to this level. The 6-lane freeways have short, rapid white lines which provide a great sense of speed. Has all the standard municipal buildings and car shops. Add to that a multitude of neon signs advertising everything from pizza to strip shows!
Scientist Research Labs are very clean but very monotonous because of that. The lit and unlit windows add a bit of interest and there are some cool rooftop utility variants. Zaibatsu’s DeCon Labs from bil.sty
/bil.gmp
are miles better. These bil.sty
buildings have more features (such as, erm, doors) and there’s oodles of interesting power infrastructure and endless types of warehouse, as you’d expect from an Industrial set.
The Village features big, glassy, modernish buildings with neat lawns and pink pavements. Quite distinctive and a coherent area but they clash badly with any other buildings. Takes a large structure to use the special rooves, which is bad news for arena levels.
That to one side, you can make interesting areas if you stick to the good tiles. Here’s the list I made whilst building Jailbreak Chapter 1, so I could focus on using the best bits.
