Start Using Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1
The UI of IE7 was pretty awful on Windows XP. Does IE8b1 give any clues about how this version will turn out?

This add-on was blocked. It must be updated to use with Internet Explorer 8.

This shows up every time I run it. It’s told me the toolbar won’t work. Why should I need to do something to stop it telling me what it already told me again and again?
It should only show up the first time, even when the user does nothing about it.
Loading Up

It begins loading a web page. Information Bar says:
Internet Explorer is currently running with add-ons disabled. Click to manage, disable, or remove your add-ons.
Much like the error message, this shows up every time. It is only useful the first time.
Set Options

The text in this window is too big. Looks like it was pasted from a word processor.
I didn’t immediately understand what this window was trying to help me accomplish. Neither option was “use my current settings”. I chose Ask me later. It didn’t ask me again until 9th March 2008, 2 days later. That’s a sensible value of “later”, I think.
Curiously, you get a sizing cursor when hovering over the borders of this window but it cannot be resized!
A Useful Start Page!

Intelligently and conveniently, the browser had started at the Knowledge Base article about the error message I had seen when first trying to start IE8b1.
But it starts here every time. I’ve already read it twice, thinking perhaps something had changed. It’s only useful to show this the first time.
Early Impressions
After a few quick goes with IE8b1, I’m slightly but pleasantly surprised. I poked a couple of features and nothing exploded. It has not got noticably worse since IE7 and couple of things seem a bit better.
Check the IE8b1 review overview for things I find after using it more.
