Scheduled Test in AVG Free Edition
Each day, AVG looks for viruses. It calls this a test or a scan.
System Tray Icon

The test starts almost silently. But it adds a second AVG icon to the system tray instead of changing the first icon.
The tooltip for the second icon says “test”.
Context Menus
Each icon has its own context menu. Showing it on left-click would be friendly.
They respond helpfully to double-click.
First Icon

- Launch AVG Free Control Center
- Quit AVG Free Control Center
- Launch AVG Test Center
- -
- AVG Free - Online Services
- Check for Updates
Observations
- These captions are really long.
- Says “test”, not “scan”.
- Switches between AVG Free foo and AVG foo.
- Double-click action is bold.
- 2 of these 5 items have an access key defined and underlined.
Second Icon

- Show Scanning Progress
- -
- Pause Scanning/Resume Scanning
- Cancel Scanning
Observations
- Double-click action is not bold.
- Access keys are undefined or at least not underlined.
- Why have a separator in a group of 3 related items?
- “Scanning” could just be “Scan”.
- “Show Scanning Progress” could just be “Show Progress”.
- What is the scan looking for? Viruses? Make this clearer.
Combined Context Menu Idea
Using a single icon in the system tray, when a scan isn’t running:
- Open AVG
- Online Help
- Exit
During a scan it must grow:
- Open AVG
- Online Help
- -
- Pause Virus Scan/Resume Scan
- Cancel Virus Scan
- -
- Exit
Open AVG goes to the scan progress view while a scan is running.
Pause Scanning

Pauses the scan, then shows the Complete Test window. “Test” or “scan”?
Focus is on the Continue button but Resume would match the context menu.
But why was this window displayed? I didn’t click Show Scanning Progress. I just wanted to pause.
Recommendations
- Use a single icon in the system tray.
- Use a combined context menu.
- Remove the Complete Test window. Main window has a progress view for scans.
- Don’t call it a “test”. “Virus scan” is a more familiar phrase.
