Zoe and Sarah Tie the Knot (15th March 2008)
The 3rd wedding I have ever attended was today. My half-sister, Zoe is now in a Civil Partership with Sarah. Apparently the Church of England thinks this isn’t a marriage. Everyone else does.
At the party afterwards I gave a speech, something along these lines:
It is said that the path of true love never did run smooth. I think it’s fair to say it’s been a bit of a bumpy ride for Zoe and Sarah. [Thankfully people chuckled at this.] But they’ve stick together, though the hard times and the good times.
They have built a life together. At the end of the day, I think that’s what marriage is all about.
Let’s celebrate the life they’ve built; the life they now share. Long may it continue. To Zoe and Sarah.
[Audience applauds.]
The shortness was to minimise my chances of messing it up. Drinking 2 double “Barcardi and Cokes” during the preceeding hour or two helped to steady my nerves. I was relieved the happy couple liked it since I had kept its contents a surprise.
