Closer to Smart Headers. Direction flipped to header cells←data cell.
HTML5 (November 2008):
Similar approach to Smart Headers but makes different design choices.
HTML5 (September 2007):
Was clearly marked as unfinished in the spec.
Smart Colspan/Smart Headers:
Researched since May 2007 with several Participants. First described in August 2007.
Experimental:
Based on James Graham’s interpretation of the HTML4 algorithm, plus:
  • rows/columns containing only headers do not propogate those headers to other cells in the row/column;
  • and cells with scope are not matched against cells outside their scope by the implicit stage of the algorithm.
HTML4:
Is interpreted in many different ways. Alternative readings are better as new algorithms.
